Alexander Howanski, age 100, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 ( just 6-weeks shy of his 101'st birthday ). Beloved husband of the late Anastasia Gusova Howanski. Loving father of Olga Haugeberg, Lydia Krywaruczenko, and, Alexander Howanski, Jr. Devoted grandfather of Thomas Haugeberg, Laura Loppnow, Lisa Voytovick, Tanya Galer, Kristina Stien, Nicholas Howanski and Lauren Kolzow. Cherished great-grandfather of 13. Visitation will be held at chapel on Saturday, March 9'th from 9:00 - 11:30 A.M. Funeral will follow at 11:30 with a Chapel Service; Fr. Ivan Lymar of St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, presiding. Graveside Interment at Elmwood Cemetery; River Grove.
Alexander was a member of the Brotherhood of Cossacks from Ukraine. Alexander, along with his wife, their oldest daughter and Alexander's father emigrated to the United States Of America in the early 1950's through Ellis Island in New York City, New York. During World War II, the Howanski family in Ukraine was very affluent and owned flour mills and farms until the Nazis forcibly evicted them from their homes and sent them to Siberia. They ultimately escaped and made their way to Germany. Alexander's mother and sisters perished from the starvation of the 1930's. Once arriving in the U.S.A. and being processed the family settled in Richmond, VA where Alexander worked as a farmer for 3 years and around 1945-55 made their way to Chicago, IL. In 1958 he bought a home in DesPlaines, IL where he resided until his death.
Alexander worked for the U.S. Railroad upon his relocation to Chicago for about 10 years. He then took a position with Sears, Roebuck and Company and retired from their after 25 years.
Alexander was a very active member of the Cathedral until he could not attend due to physical limitations. His Memory is Forever Eternal.
