Obituary

Oksana Olha Rozdolsky passed away July 14, 2022, peacefully at home with her children at her side. Oksana was born in Vienna, Austria in 1930, but lived in Delyatyn, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine. After WWII, Oksana emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina where she met her future husband Levko. With two children in tow, they moved to the United States to settle in Chicago ultimately presenting nine citizens to the world. Having moved around three continents, it comes as small wonder that Oksana developed a bug for travel and exploration. Squeezed between all the responsibilities of motherhood, Oksana maneuvered  a multiplicity of trips to Western Europe and full circle back to Ukraine with her friend of over 50 years Irene Horajsky. Inspired, and with determination, added to bagloads of experiences and knowledge, Oksana proceeded to complete a doctorate in Slavic Studies at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
As a child, Oksana was known to be mischievous; as an adult, Oksana used that energy and imagination for the raising of her children, as well as, the commitment to the community in Chicago in which they lived. As her children tended to their schooling and participated in community activities, Oksana did everything from scrambling buckets of breakfast eggs for summer camp in Round Lake; to heading a branch of a Womens' organization (UNWLA). For over half a century Oksana contributed to projects in the Ukrainian community in Chicago and donated to needs in Ukraine.
Levko passed away in 1985, and Oksana was remarried to Dr. Roman Maslyanko from Lviv in 1995. Oksana spent six months out of the year in Chicago, and six months in Ukraine. While in Ukraine, Oksana helped fund the renovation of her childhood home, which became a school and is now the local museum in Delyatyn. Never forgetting her immigration and roots, she sponsored many Ukrainian people moving to Chicago, including taking in an orphan girl and getting her placed with a family. Roman passed away in 2016, and the Rozdolsky family in Chicago is close to the Maslyanko family in Lviv.
Many have memories of her uniqueness. For example, wearing slacks in Ukraine before it was fashionable for women there. Or, being the most senior on a tour in Italy, after taking a small fall on stairs, the group lamented that she would miss the trip to Pompeii. The next day, greeted with applause, Oksana said: " This is a chance of a lifetime: I'm not going to miss it." And proceeded to negotiate the streets with no less success than any of the group. With her love for reading and writing, Oksana understood the value of compiling the works of her mother, Lesya Verkhovynka, and took immense joy in publishing them in Ukraine. Her own memoirs, however, are left incomplete but may be imagined as a template to help other immigrants.
Oksana is survived by her children Lesya (Dennis), Terry (April), Nadia, Mark, Tim and Nick (Lily). Preceded in death by sons Andrew, George, and Jerry. Oksana will be missed by her grandchildren Olivia, Krista, Annette, Zach, and Josh as well as close relatives in Canada (daughter-in-law Svytlana) and Ukraine.
